Sr. Chassis Dynamics Development Engineer
- The multidisciplinary chassis dynamics group focuses on chassis dynamic performance development includes high performance vehicles lateral/vertical dynamics, designated hardware based lateral dynamics active control, trailer towing stability in all weather and road conditions found in North America.
- The group’s main function of testing, calibrating, and developing the passive and active chassis dynamic performance of HMG vehicles aligns with our corporate goal of delivering the best vehicles for the North American customer through regional technical leadership and global collaboration.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
- Chassis dynamics development includes handling focused active chassis control performance development (e-LSD, e-AWD, Rear Wheel Steering, Steer By Wire, etc.)
- High performance vehicle on road (track) & off road (baja/desert running) chassis dynamic performance development
- Trailer towing dynamics and stability control performance development
- Advanced research activities include objective test/analysis, simulation, and control logic development
- Develop in-house testing as needed, specifying and procuring instrumentation and conducting test trials.
- Develop/conduct objective test and analysis following National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA) test procedures and major media test procedure
- Conduct objective benchmarking of competitive vehicles and Hyundai/Kia at specified development “gateway points.”
- Conduct customer feedback research to understand customer requirement. Understand and translate HMC, KMC, HMA, and KMA product vision for Vehicle Dynamics into actual vehicle performance.
- Support all chassis research & development activities at the Proving Ground.
- Work in a team environment as well as independently. Mentor junior level engineers.
- Support manufacturing organization with pre-launch activities through plant visits. Support special problem assessment and countermeasure recommendations.
- Attend industry sponsored Conferences & Trainings, and Vendor Demonstrations to review and continuously improve chassis components and systems.
- Create and present technical reports as assigned.
- Collaborate with Chassis/Brake and NVH Engineers to develop and improve ESC and Chassis Dynamics Control performance for HMG vehicles as needed.
- May be required to install suspension related parts or tires on vehicles or to direct technicians to perform installations.
- Perform additional chassis development projects as assigned.
- Travel up to 40% of time domestically and internationally.
- Assist in planning and monitoring of department budget.
- Perform administrative functions such as purchasing requests, timecard, vacation requests, travel requests, etc.
WHAT YOU WILL BRING TO THE ROLE
- Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, or a related field of study
- 10+ years of vehicle dynamics and control area engineering experience - chassis control / high-performance chassis dynamics
- Strong understanding of vehicle dynamics, control system development, and chassis performance development
- 5+ years of experience in vehicle stability, controllability, and traction performance development (preferred)
- High performance driving skills and good subjective evaluation skills
- Background in prototype vehicle on-road testing and performance measurement
- Experience working in culturally diverse team environment.
- Knowledge of Automotive Industry engineering and manufacturing.
- Knowledge of electrified vehicle architecture, brake by wire and regenerative braking systems.
- Knowledge of Project Management principles and practices.
- Proficient driving skills.
- Expert technical report writing skills.
- Proficient with data acquisition systems and sensing equipment including CAN bus data acquisition.
- Proficient Project Management skills.
- Proficient skills in MS Office – Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.
- Proficient time management and organization skills.
- Proficient self-management skills.
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and capability.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality, integrity and ethical behavior.
- Valid Driver's License and satisfactory driving record

Physical Demands, Work Environment, Travel Expectations:
- Able to work in a culturally diverse team environment and in harsh climate conditions (Winter -40F, Summer +120F, altitude up to 14,000 ft)
- Travel up to 30%, up to 3 weeks in duration at a time, domestically and internationally to support product development, testing, and promotion
