Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI) is searching for a Manager for the Chassis Engineering Team II
The Team:
The Chassis Engineering Team II would oversee the design, development, and release efforts of the following disciplines: chassis mounts, vehicle braking systems, and vehicle driveline systems
The Position:
The Chassis Engineering Team II Manager would have a wide breadth of automotive experience with the ability to lead the design and development of numerous vehicles with a focus on SUVs, body-on-frame pickup trucks, and off-road vehicle capabilities that meet or exceed Hyundai Motor Group (HMG)'s NA customer requirements from concept through lifecycle production, while simultaneously developing new technologies and adhering to the highest safety standards
What You Will Do:
- Strategic Leadership: Support the Sr. Chassis Engineering Design Team Manager with creating, communicating, and executing the department's vision in support of VE (Vehicle Engineering), HATCI, and HMG's respective goals and business objectives
- Business Management: Successfully meet all KPIs, including program timing, cost and quality improvement, intellectual property, budget, personnel development, corporate culture, etc.; develop goals and objectives for all direct reports; lead tasks and projects to support the related team’s work plan, satisfying all goals and budget spending via the Chassis Engineering Design R&D budget
- Team Management: Support VE's vision via annual teamwork and budget planning; lead tasks and projects to support the related team’s work plan; manage and direct Engineers in daily activities for work projects relating to team activities in support of Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis vehicles; ensure administrative functions such as purchasing, timecard, vacation, and travel requests, are followed on a timely basis; manage, train, evaluate, discipline, and support recommendations for hire, pay changes, promotions, or terminations; write and execute performance and competency evaluations
- Vehicle Development: Serve as a subject matter expert on automotive chassis engineering-related items (e.g., master cylinders, brake lines and hoses, calipers, rotors, drums, pads, shoes, brake fluid, sensors, pressure modulators, ABS, ESC, TCS, force distribution systems, HDC, EPB actuators, driveshafts, differentials, axles, u-Joints, hubs and bearings, mounts); test chassis designs concerning EVs, SUVs, light-duty trucks, and off-road vehicles; ensure the vehicle development process is followed from concept to post-production, satisfying all customer requirements along the way; conduct competitive benchmarking and detailed engineering cost/weight analysis; execute engineering orders, meet safety/regulatory targets, etc.; oversee design releasing responsibilities for Chassis Engineering Team 2 Engineers via the Checker Approval status in Hyundai's EO (Engineering Order) system
- Plant Life Cycle Support: Support the Americas plants (located in Georgia, Alabama, Mexico, and Brazil) with product launch metrics, continuous vehicle improvement(s), and cost and mass reductions
- Collaboration and Stakeholder Management: Advocate for internal and external customers; support collaboration with regional affiliates, such as Sales and Marketing, Manufacturing, Quality, and corporate headquarters in Korea; actively engage with all levels of personnel, from Engineers to Managers to Presidents and C-Suite, building effective relationships with all; interface and collaborate with other HATCI and VE teams, such as Project Management, Product Planning, Propulsion, Vehicle Test and Development, Electronics, Materials Development, Safety Integration, Regulation & Certification, Sales and Marketing, Manufacturing, etc., providing technical direction and guidance (when needed); create, update, and present project status and initiative reports for upper management to review
- Technology Assessment and Development: Support with the assessment and development of new technologies: develop technical road maps and strategies with production implementation in mind; liaise with multiple testing and development labs; provide support to new technology research and adoption projects
- Budget and Resource Allocation: Support the development of the R&D budget, ensure optimal utilization of resources, oversee expenses, identify savings opportunities, and support project/strategic investment decisions to support all R&D activities
- Travel up to 20% of the time, both domestically and internationally
What You Will Bring to the Role:
- Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical, automotive, or a related field of engineering
- 10+ years of chassis design experience, with a focus on brake systems, driveline systems, and vehicle mounts
- Proficiency with 3D modeling, assemblies, and 2D drawing generation via CATIA V5
- Experience with CAD data management and revision control
- Understanding of formal development processes (e.g., APQP, DFMEA, PFMEA, PPAP, etc.)
- Strong foundation in mechanical engineering fundamentals (i.e., statics, dynamics, vibrations, and materials)
- Hands-on experience with mechanical analysis (i.e., FEA and analytical calculations) and suspension kinematics
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes for chassis components (i.e., stamping, forging, welding, and machining) and design-for-manufacture principles
- Experience in planning and executing vehicle or component tests (i.e., durability rigs, track testing, and NVH evaluation)
- Ability to develop test plans, interpret data, and implement design improvements
- Flexibility with program and process changes, as Hyundai/Kia/Genesis is willing to make late changes to satisfy customer needs
- Good written, oral, interpersonal, and leadership skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft programs, such as Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word
- Excellent time management, self-management, and organization skills
- Ability to remain current with new technologies and best practices
- Willingness to attend training, workshops, or conferences to enhance skills
- Ability to diagnose and resolve complex, section-related issues
- Valid Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in mechanical, automotive, or a related field of engineering
- 2+ years of mentoring entry to mid-level engineers and project management experience (as an engineering manager)
- Experience working on electric or hybrid vehicle chassis systems
- Familiarity with EVs, pickup trucks, SUVs, and off-road vehicles
- Experience performing advanced chassis modeling, simulations, and optimization via CAE tools (e.g., ANSYS, Nastran, MATLAB/Simulink, etc.)
- In-depth understanding of vehicle ride & handling, off-road performance, and NVH considerations specific to heavy-duty trucks and SUVs
- Knowledge of solid axle and independent suspension systems in off-road conditions
- Familiarity with CATIA V6 and PDM (i.e., ENOVIA V6) or Windchill PLM systems
- Prior involvement in vehicle program launches (from concept through production)
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or Six Sigma certification
