Electrical Design Improvement Engineer
Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI) is looking for an Engineer for the Body Electronic Design Team of the Electronic Development Department (EDD), which is one of the engineering departments in the Electronic Systems Development (ESD) Division
The Team:
EDD oversees the design and validation of body electronic features and components concerning Hyundai/Kia/Genesis vehicles
The Position:
The Electrical Design Improvement Engineer would seek opportunities to improve the design of electrical components for vehicles built at Hyundai's North American assembly plants, implement any approved changes relevant to the pursuit of design improvement, and oversee/support issue resolution concerning vehicle wire harness ASM-related issues at Hyundai's North American plants. Thus, the individual would be required to:
- Be technically competent, highly motivated, and a proactive self-starter
- Be proficient in analyzing data to identify areas for improvement, troubleshooting production issues, and contributing to project-related tasks
- Be highly adept at providing technical support for vehicle wire harness-related concerns and managing the issue resolution process
What You Will Do:
- Design Release/Change Management:
- Learn (via training) the HMC program deliverables and milestones for respective vehicle programs; align ECU design timing to the overall vehicle program timing
- Establish a DV/PV test plan for design components
- Support the supplier selection process and component specification requirements development
- Establish component design and development timing plan
- Ensure the timely meeting of design milestones and deliverables
- Lead/support meetings with R&D colleagues, component suppliers, and/or cross-functional teams
- Support on-site production activities in North American manufacturing facilities (when applicable)
- Troubleshooting:
- Diagnose and resolve wiring-related issues, including short circuits, open circuits, and loose connections
- Perform basic electrical tests and measurements using appropriate tools (e.g., voltmeters, ohmmeters, etc.)
- Documentation and Record Keeping:
- Track all issues related to the design/development of components, ensure resolution (with identifying root causes and corrective actions), and document lessons learned
- Accurately document all changes requested and implemented as part of the ‘Engineering Order (EO)' process and requirements
- Create and present reports for management to review
- Report content would vary depending on the scope of work; however, regular reports would include the statuses of projects for successful delivery, technical advancements, new trends, and competitive benchmark studies
- Develop/maintain positive relationships with tech experts from the R&D Center and counterpart teams
- Travel up to 15% of the time, both domestically and internationally
What You Will Bring to the Role:
- Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in electrical or mechanical engineering
- Automotive engineering experience
- Understanding of ECU HW/SW design, vehicle electronic architecture and systems, network bus communication, wiring/connectors, DV/PV testing, and supplier management
- Flexibility with program and process changes, as Hyundai/Kia/Genesis is willing to make late changes to satisfy customer needs
- Familiarity with electrical hardware packaging
- Experience in CATIA or similar CAD systems preferred
- Knowledge of electrical principles and wiring systems
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and schematics
- Experience with basic electrical testing equipment
- Ability to identify, analyze, and resolve design-related issues
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Ability to think critically and make sound judgments
- Good verbal, written, and interpersonal skills
- Basic computer skills for documentation and record-keeping
- Excellent time management, self-management, and organization skills
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in electrical or mechanical engineering
- EV-related experience
