Electrochemistry Development Manager
Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI) is seeking an engineering manager for the Electrochemistry Development Team. The Electrochemistry Development Team is a part of the Battery Cell Research and Development Department, a department within the Advanced Engineering Lab (AEL) Division, which oversees projects concerning EV high-voltage battery cell research and development.
What You Will Do:
- Establish and build the section’s team, lab, resources, capabilities, and project portfolio concerning production vehicle support and new battery cell technology development
- Lead an advanced battery cell development team on developing next-gen advanced battery chemistries, in addition to evaluating potential new battery materials from suppliers
- Understand, follow, and continually communicate with one's direct reports the department’s business model, strategic direction, purpose, and mission
- Set section-related goals and objectives that align with the department’s direction. Then, drive execution, engagement, and results to accomplish them.
- Develop and manage the section’s plan, strategy, and budget allocation/usage
- Manage direct reports, including task assignments, professional development, and employee evaluation
- Work with the Director and Senior Manager to participate in the department’s resource planning, goal setting, and technology roadmap creation
- Foster inner-team collaboration and knowledge sharing through transparent communication
- Produce and deliver executive-level presentations on key project milestones/achievements
- To drive innovation, remain current with new technology and competitive products
- Provide technical guidance and support for EV battery cell-related concerns for pre-production and post-production issues
- Lead/oversee engineering projects on identifying and developing new high-voltage battery technologies, strategies, and methods to support the production of current and future Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis hybrid and battery-electric vehicles
- Provide the North American electric vehicle plant with localized production parts verification and technical support
- Respond to EV quality issues in NA by performing quality data acquisition, root cause analysis, and/or improvement verification
- Conduct feasibility analyses of new battery cell technologies through simulation and lab tests
- Communicate selected battery technologies to Korean R&D Headquarters to introduce them to current or next-generation production programs
- Manage research activities with external partners including national labs, universities, and tech suppliers
- Investigate industry trends through competitive benchmarking and apply that information to set development directions and guide performance target settings
- Investigate industry trends by monitoring the publication of technical papers and reports internally/externally
- Travel up to 20% of the time, both domestically and internationally
What You Will Bring to the Role:
- Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in electrical, mechanical, chemical, materials science, or a related engineering field
- 5+ years of automotive battery development
- 2+ years of project management experience
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal, communication, leadership, and people management skills
- Demonstrated ability to work collegially with others with the highest standards of integrity
- Strong working knowledge and experience in battery cell components, principles, operation, and vehicle electrification technologies
- Proven track record of engineering projects related to the testing and development of advanced battery materials (i.e., anode, cathodes, and/or electrolytes)
- Ability to form and maintain relationships with other functions, including different departments within HATCI and its affiliates (e.g., Korea R&D Center, Hyundai Motor North America, Kia US, etc.)
- Knowledge of vehicle or vehicle component test procedures
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Knowledge of advanced Li-ion, Na-ion, and solid-state battery chemistries
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's or PhD degree in electrical, mechanical, chemical, materials science, or a related engineering field
- 2+ years of people management experience (as an engineering manager)
- Experience building a battery testing facility (i.e., specifying, installing, and commissioning test equipment)
- Experience with building/developing an organization
