Sr. Vehicle Energy Efficiency Engineer

Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI) is seeking a Senior Engineer for the Vehicle Energy Efficiency (VEE) Team. This position will support HATCI’s vehicle energy efficiency development efforts. VEE Engineers are responsible for vehicle on-road and on-dyno testing, simulation, data analysis, benchmarking, identifying industry trends, and developing strategies for improving vehicle energy efficiency.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Test and validate the development of vehicle fuel economy according to EPA test procedures for internal combustion engines and hybrid vehicles
  • Establish and support targets for vehicle energy efficiency (i.e., MPG, MPGe, and all-electric range) through testing and analysis of current and future vehicles
  • Benchmark key competitive vehicles and related propulsion system technologies
  • Analyze competitive data sets and assess future trends in passenger vehicle fuel economy and energy efficiency-related technologies
  • Develop and maintain efficiency test procedures for ICE and HEVs
  • Simulate vehicle energy flows, losses, and road loads
  • Collaborate with and support the global R&D headquarters team in South Korea
  • Travel up to 10% of the time, both domestically and internationally

Core Capabilities:

  • Familiarity with EPA greenhouse gas emissions standards for passenger cars and light trucks, including corporate average fuel economy and GHG credits
  • Experience and detailed understanding of vehicle propulsion systems, including internal combustion engine, hybrid, and PHEV configurations
  • Proven understanding of conventional, hybrid, and electric vehicle energy flows, such as drive energy, energy losses (i.e., friction, aerodynamics, etc.), thermal loads, and energy conversion efficiency
  • Working-level knowledge of vehicle testing tools, such as ETAS INCA (or equivalent), and CAN bus monitoring applications, such as Vector CANalyzer (or equivalent)
  • Working-level knowledge of MATLAB for data analysis and graphing

What You Will Bring to the Role:

  • Basic Qualifications:
    • Bachelor's degree in mechanical, electrical, or a related engineering field from an accredited university
    • 5+ years of experience with these responsibilities and capabilities
    • Experience in completing these responsibilities and capabilities
    • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with peers, management, and executive staff
    • Valid Driver’s License and a satisfactory driving record
    • Able to work in a culturally diverse team environment and in harsh climate conditions (i.e., winter: -40F, summer: +120F, and altitude up to 14,000 feet)

 

  • Preferred Qualifications:
    • ​​​​​​​Master's degree in mechanical, electrical, or a related engineering field from an accredited university
    • 7+ years of experience with these responsibilities and capabilities
