Vehicle Safety Component Test Engineer

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Support automotive safety system and component test engineering efforts:
    • Plan, coordinate, execute, and support system and component-level tests
      • Pre-test: Create vehicle safety test plans/checklists, and coordinate with requestors and technician team members
      • Test: Attend, determine set-up conditions, and execute in-person tests
      • Post-test: Collect, post-process, and analyze data, in addition to conducting post-test vehicle/component teardowns and inspections
    • Generate technical reports of test performance results
    • Provide requestors with test reports and data sets
  • Contribute to system and component test practices and standards:
    • Test Methods: Study/use R&D, regulatory, and Consumer metrics in relation to testing practices
    • Monitor pedestrian protection impacts (i.e., lower leg, upper leg, and headform)
    • Ensure safety standards are being met (e.g., FMVSS 201u – Upper Interior Impacts (FMH), FMVSS 226 – Ejection Mitigation (EJM), etc.)
    • Oversee airbag deployments
  • Utilize, maintain, and calibrate the following tools and devices for safety-related purposes:
    • Hybrid-compressed, gas-powered cylinder test rigs (i.e., impact test rigs)
    • DAQ (data acquisition) systems
    • High-speed video capture cameras
    • 3D coordinate-measuring machines
    • 3D imaging laser scanners
    • Sensors/transducers (e.g., accelerometers, potentiometers, load cells, LVDTs, etc.)
  • Assess current system and component test processes and procedures, and develop/recommend engineering improvements
  • Travel up to 5% of the time, both domestically and internationally

HOW WILL YOU MAKE AN IMPACT

  • Solid foundational understanding of mechanical engineering principles
    (kinematics, kinetics, material properties, strength of materials)
  • Foundational understanding of automotive structure and components (ideal)
  • Foundational knowledge of automotive component testing (ideal)
    • Testing Methodology/Modalities with respect to:
      - FMVSS, US-NCAP, IIHS, Latin NCAP, ECE, EuroNCAP
    • Test Data Acquisition and Post-processing
      - Knowledge of sensors and transducers
      - Knowledge and troubleshooting skills for Data Acquisition Systems
    • Test Data High Speed Video Acquisition and Post-processing
      - Knowledge of high-speed cameras setup
      - Knowledge and troubleshooting of high-speed video acquisitions systems
    • Using test data analysis software and tools is ideal but not mandatory
      - National Instruments DIAdem, Altair Hyperworks, MS Excel, etc
  • Exhibit strong data analysis skills, attention to detail, and logical problem solving
  • Exhibit can-do attitude and approach their work with high level of determination
  • Demonstrated ability to:
    - Maintain confidentiality and demonstrate integrity
    - Ability to work independently and with others.
    - Work in a hands-on test environment
  • Self-motivator with a drive to get things done despite challenges and obstacles
  • Excellent and effective communication skills
    (verbal, email, phone call, engineering reports, etc)
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite – Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
  • Proficient time management and organization skills

WHAT YOU WILL BRING TO THE ROLE

  • BSME; Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (or similar engineering discipline)
  • 0-3 years of engineering experience
