Sr. Closures Mechanism Engineer
Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc (HATCI) is seeking a passionate and experienced Senior Engineer in Closures Mechanisms to lead & support the development of advanced closure systems for our next-generation vehicles.
The Position:
This position plays a critical role in the end-to-end engineering of functional, innovative and aesthetically integrated closures including hoods, tailgates, side doors, sunroof systems, charge port doors, and fuel filler doors, as well as dynamic sealing systems. The ideal candidate combines hands-on product development expertise with strong leadership, mentorship, and cross-functional collaboration skills in the U.S. SUV, pickup truck and off-road vehicle marketplace. In this role, one will leverage their deep mechanical engineering expertise and experience from an automotive OEM or Tier-1 environment. One must be be highly proficient in CATIA V5 and demonstrate strong leadership and mentoring skills.

WHAT YOU WILL DO
• Design & Development of various Closure Mechanisms, specifically Side Door Mechanisms.
• Lead cradle-to-grave design, development, and validation of closure mechanisms systems using CATIA V5.
• Own system integration and functional performance of predominantly side closures, and also have influence over and support hoods, tailgates, sunroof systems, charge port and fuel filler doors.
• Drive innovation in lightweight materials, modular design and user ergonomics.
• Create detailed 3D models and 2D drawings with proper GD&T in CATIA V5.
• Develop and execute DFMEAs, DVP&Rs, and support virtual analysis and physical validation.
• Interface with suppliers for design feasibility, cost, and tooling readiness.
• Collaborate with Studio Design, Body-in-White, NVH, Electrical, Manufacturing, and Quality teams to ensure robust integration and seamless vehicle functionality.
• Support prototype builds and lead issue resolution during pilot and launch phases.
• Work closely with our assembly plants to validate manufacturability and assembly robustness.
• Support launch, issue tracking, and continuous improvement input.
• Travel up to 20% (domestic and international) to support supplier visits, testing, and build events.
• Serve as a technical mentor to junior engineers and interns.
• Contribute to team growth through knowledge sharing and coaching.
• Promote a culture of inclusion, innovation, and accountability.
WHAT YOU WILL BRING TO THE ROLE
- Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical, automotive, or a related field of engineering
- 8-10 years of professional experience in Closure Mechanisms.
- Advanced Proficiency with 3D modeling, assemblies, and 2D drawing generation via CATIA V5
- Experience with CAD data management and revision control
- Familiarity with FMVSS, SAE standards, and global regulatory requirements.
- Proven experience in an automotive OEM or Tier-1 supplier environment, following formal development processes (APQP, DFMEA, PFMEA, PPAP, etc.)
- Demonstrated experience planning and executing vehicle or component tests (durability rigs, track testing, NVH evaluation). Ability to develop test plans, interpret data, and implement design improvements.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret test data, perform data-driven design decisions, and apply engineering analysis
- Flexibility with program and process changes, as Hyundai/Kia/Genesis is willing to make late changes to satisfy customer needs
- Good written, oral, interpersonal, and leadership skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft programs, such as Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word
- Experience mentoring junior engineers and communicating effectively with cross-functional teams and suppliers.
- Excellent time management, self-management, and organization skills
- Ability to remain current with new technologies and best practices
- Willingness to attend training, workshops, or conferences to enhance skills
- Ability to diagnose and resolve complex, section-related issues
- Valid Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in mechanical, automotive, or a related field of engineering
- Experience working with power closure and pickup trucks, SUVs, or off-road vehicles
- Experience with electric vehicle architecture and integration of powered closure systems
- Exposure to innovation of advanced technology development projects
- Prior patents or significant contributions to new product development are a plus.
- Understanding of Closure mechatronics, controls, vehicle integration and crash performance.
- Prior involvement in vehicle program launches (from concept through production)
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or Six Sigma certification
