Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI), is the design, technology and engineering arm for all North American models of the Korea-based Hyundai Motor Group.  The Electrified Propulsion Performance Test (ePPT) team is one of the groups in the Electrified Propulsion Development division of HATCI responsible for delivering propulsion system performance, emissions compliance, onboard diagnostics, quality, validation, and technical support for Hyundai, Genesis, and Kia vehicles.

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Emissions Development Manager to lead the gasoline and hybrid vehicle emissions calibration team in Superior Township, Michigan. This position is responsible for leading the development of emissions calibrations and aftertreatment strategies for future Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) and Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) applications, including advanced emissions programs targeting LEV IV, Tier 4, SULEV20, and SULEV30 compliance. This position reports to the senior manager of ePPT.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

• Lead and manage a team of emissions calibration engineers responsible for development and release of certification ready emissions calibrations for gasoline and hybrid vehicle programs.
• Establish team goals, technical direction, and development strategies aligned with departmental objectives and future emissions regulations
• Drive emissions calibration development activities from early concept through production launch and ongoing optimization.
• Lead development of emissions control strategies to meet LEV IV, Tier 4, SULEV20, SULEV30, and future regulatory requirements.
• Oversee catalyst and aftertreatment system development, including catalyst formulation selection, performance optimization, aging robustness, and emissions system integration.
• Direct development and calibration of catalyst heating strategies to achieve rapid light-off and minimize cold-start emissions.
• Lead calibration and optimization of air-fuel ratio (lambda) control systems, combustion stability, transient fueling, and engine management strategies that impact emissions performance.
• Guide development of particulate matter (PM) reduction strategies and emissions compliance solutions for gasoline and hybrid applications.
• Lead identification, investigation, and resolution of emissions compliance issues throughout vehicle development programs.
• Develop and implement robust emissions calibration processes that ensure successful certification and production readiness.
• Collaborate closely with powertrain controls, engine calibration, aftertreatment, vehicle integration, testing, and certification teams to achieve program targets.
• Manage engineering resources, development plans, budgets, and program deliverables supporting multiple vehicle programs.
• Assign technical responsibilities to direct reports and provide coaching, mentorship, performance feedback, and career development opportunities.
• Build and maintain team technical excellence in emissions development, combustion systems, aftertreatment technologies, and regulatory compliance.
• Support emissions certification activities and provide technical justification for regulatory submissions when required.
• Present technical recommendations, development status, risks, and program achievements to executive leadership in North America and Korea.
• Drive continuous improvement of emissions development methodologies, calibration tools, simulation capabilities, and engineering processes.
• Travel both domestically and internationally (up to 15%)

WHAT YOU WILL BRING TO THE ROLE

• Educational Requirements:
  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or a related engineering discipline from an accredited university.

• Related Industry Experience Requirements:
  • 10+ years of automotive engineering experience
  • 8+ years of gasoline engine, hybrid powertrain, emissions calibration, engine controls, or aftertreatment development experience.
  • 3+ years of technical leadership or management experience leading engineers and calibration teams
  • Demonstrated experience delivering production ready emissions calibrations for vehicle development programs.

• Required Skills and Knowledge:
  • Strong expertise in gasoline and hybrid powertrain emissions development and calibration.
  • Deep understanding of combustion systems, catalyst technologies, emissions control systems, and engine management strategies.
  • Proven experience developing emissions calibrations to meet US and global regulatory requirements, including LEV III/LEV IV, Tier 3/Tier 4, SULEV20, and SULEV30 standards.
  • Experience with catalyst light-off optimization, catalyst heating strategies, cold-start emissions reduction, and thermal management techniques.
  • Strong knowledge of lambda control system development, fueling strategies, combustion optimization, and emissions system interactions.
  • Experience with particulate matter mitigation strategies and regulatory compliance.
  • Proven track record of delivering certification ready emissions calibrations from development through production release.
  • Strong understanding of powertrain controls architecture, calibration tools, and model-based development methodologies.
  • Experience using ETAS INCA, ATI Vision, CANape, MATLAB/Simulink, or equivalent calibration and development tools.
  • Working knowledge of vehicle communication networks (CAN, LIN, Ethernet, etc.).
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and root-cause investigation skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present highly technical information to both engineering and executive audiences.
  • Ability to effectively collaborate with global engineering organizations and external suppliers.

• Additional Requirements:
  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or related field.
  • Experience leading emissions calibration development for multiple vehicle programs simultaneously.
  • Direct experience supporting emissions certification activities with EPA and CARB regulatory agencies.
  • Familiarity with catalyst modeling, emissions simulation tools, and virtual calibration techniques.
  • Understanding of OBD system development and integration with emissions calibration strategies.
  • Experience with data analytics and large vehicle datasets using Python, MATLAB, R, or similar tools.
  • Experience developing emissions strategies for conventional ICE, hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains.
