Sr. Chassis Mounts Engineer
Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc (HATCI) is seeking a Senior Chassis Engineer to lead and support the design, development, and validation of all chassis mounts for U.S. SUV, pickup truck and off-road vehicles. In this role you will own the engineering of body mounts, engine mounts, exhaust mounts, frame mounts, suspension mounts, transmission mounts etc, ensuring that all components meet performance, safety, and durability requirements. You will use CATIA V5 to create complex 3D models and detailed drawings, perform analysis, and work closely with powertrain, suspension, body, and testing teams to integrate your designs into the overall vehicle architecture. The ideal candidate combines deep technical expertise in chassis integration with strong leadership and mentorship skills, guiding junior engineers and driving continuous improvement. This position is based in Superior Township, MI, where you will collaborate on-site with cross-functional teams in a dynamic automotive engineering environment. Candidates applying for positions with Hyundai-Kia must be legally authorized to work in the United States, verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
• Chassis Mounts Design: Lead the conceptualization and detailed design of chassis mounting systems – including body mounts, engine/transmission mounts, exhaust and frame mounts, and suspension attachment points – to optimize vehicle performance and NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) characteristics. Generate 3D CAD models and technical drawings in CATIA V5 for components and assemblies.
• Structural Analysis & Validation: Support structural and durability analyses (using FEA, multibody dynamics, etc.) to validate designs under real-world load and vibration conditions. Iterate designs based on simulation and test feedback to ensure robustness and compliance with engineering requirements.
• Prototype & Testing: Develop, support & execute test plans for prototypes (physical or virtual) to validate load paths, strength, and fatigue life of mounts. Work closely with test engineers to build, instrument, and evaluate prototypes. Incorporate test results into design refinements and ensure the final product meets all functional and safety targets.
• Integration & Compliance: Collaborate with powertrain, suspension, body-in-white, manufacturing, and NVH teams to ensure seamless integration of chassis mount systems into the vehicle. Ensure designs meet all relevant In-House due care, Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) and SAE regulations for structural components and safety-related systems. Maintain knowledge of FMVSS requirements and SAE standards to guide design decisions.
• Documentation & Release: Prepare and review detailed design documentation, including CAD models, drawings, and specifications. Manage component release processes, ensuring data integrity and that all design releases meet company and regulatory standards. Lead design reviews and sign-off processes to guarantee quality and manufacturability.
• Supplier & Project Coordination: Engage with suppliers (Tier-1 or OEM) to clarify design requirements, resolve engineering issues, and support tooling or production changes. Manage design change processes and component updates, ensuring timely implementation of modifications. Establish and maintain strong working relationships across engineering disciplines to meet project milestones and deliverables.
• Leadership & Mentorship: Act as a technical lead and mentor for junior chassis engineers. Provide guidance on engineering best practices, CAD/FEA techniques, and project execution. Foster a collaborative team environment, sharing knowledge and encouraging innovative problem-solving. Lead by example in meeting objectives, timelines, and high-quality standards.
• Travel: Occasional domestic and international travel (approximately 20%) to our Korean HQ, supplier facilities, chassis component manufacturers, and CA test tracks are expected. Travel may also include collaboration with off-site engineering teams or attendance at industry events.
WHAT YOU WILL BRING TO THE ROLE
- Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience: 8–10 years of professional experience in chassis and suspension design, with a focus on Chassis Mount Systems. Experience specifically with pickup trucks, SUVs, or off-road vehicles is highly preferred.
- Experience working on electric or hybrid vehicle Suspension systems. Prior experience with pick-up trucks, SUVs or off-road vehicles and knowledge of their specific Suspension Systems / durability / set up / articulation etc is a plus.
Advanced Analysis: Proficiency in CAE tools (e.g. ANSYS, Nastran, MATLAB/Simulink) for advanced suspension modeling, dynamic simulations, or optimization is a plus.
Vehicle Dynamics: In-depth understanding of vehicle ride & handling, off-road performance, and NVH considerations specific to heavy-duty trucks and SUVs. Knowledge of solid axle and independent suspension systems in off-road conditions.
Additional CAD/CAE: Familiarity with CAD software (e.g. CATIA V6) and PDM (ENOVIA V6) or Windchill PLM systems. - Certifications: Professional Engineer (PE) license or Six Sigma certification, if applicable, are advantageous.
